WoW TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Guide: Black Temple, Mount Hyjal & How to Prepare

TBC Anniversary Phase 3 is reported to launch on Thursday, August 27, 2026, and it brings the Tier 6 era with it. Black Temple arrives with nine bosses, the Battle for Mount Hyjal with five more, plus Arena Season 3, the Netherwing daily hub and epic gems entering the economy. It’s the biggest content drop of the Anniversary run so far. Players who walk in attuned will spend launch week raiding, while everyone else spends it questing. Here’s everything worth locking in beforehand, and where our TBC Anniversary boost services shortcut the parts you’d rather not grind.

When Does TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Release?

Phase 3 is reported to open on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Phase 2 content winds down the week before, and Arena Season 3 follows in early September. That leaves roughly three weeks to prepare. Preparation is the whole difference between raiding on day one and watching your guild raid without you.

Two raids arrive together. Black Temple is the flagship — nine bosses, ending with Illidan Stormrage and the Warglaives of Azzinoth. Mount Hyjal runs five bosses through a wave-defense format nothing else in the expansion resembles. Both start the Tier 6 era, both demand attunement, and neither waits for you to catch up.

Attunement Checklist: Don’t Get Locked Out

Attunements are the most common reason players miss the first raid week. Both Phase 3 raids gate behind quest chains that take days, with prerequisites in Phase 2 content you may not have finished. Start now, not on launch night.

Raid Attunement What It Requires
Mount Hyjal The Vials of Eternity Revered with Keepers of Time, plus Vashj’s Vial Remnant from Lady Vashj (SSC) and Kael’s Vial Remnant from Kael’thas (Tempest Keep)
Black Temple Medallion of Karabor chain Level 70, Aldor or Scryers allegiance, Arcatraz and Hyjal attunement, then the full Akama questline ending in A Distraction for Akama

Read that Hyjal row carefully: it means your raid must already be killing Lady Vashj and Kael’thas before Hyjal opens. Those two are the hardest bosses in Phase 2. Groups that haven’t downed them yet have three weeks to fix that. The Black Temple chain stacks on top, running through Shadowmoon Valley from Anchorite Ceyla to Akama. It ends with the medallion that ports you inside.

If the chain is the blocker rather than the raid itself, a Black Temple attunement boost covers it end to end, prerequisites included.

Black Temple: What You’re Walking Into

Black Temple is nine bosses deep and it punishes preparation gaps more than skill gaps. Naj’entus opens with a spread check, Supremus tests movement, and Shade of Akama runs a one-minute add race. Teron Gorefiend turns dead raiders into ghosts who must clear constructs. The Reliquary of Souls then runs three phases with three completely different rules. Then it gets serious.

The three walls of Black Temple

  • Mother Shahraz — the Shadow Resistance check. Saber Lash needs three tanks stacked, Fatal Attraction demands a 25-yard spread. Without resistance gear, healers simply cannot keep up.
  • Illidari Council — four bosses, one health pool. A Mage spellsteal-tanks Zerevor, someone interrupts Malande every cast, Gathios holds as primary. Coordination, not gear.
  • Illidan Stormrage — five phases. Two Flames of Azzinoth need separate tanks, Demon Form needs a Warlock tank at range, and the final phase turns on Maiev’s Cage Traps.

Shadow Resistance is the prep nobody starts early enough. Mother Shahraz is where undergeared raids die repeatedly, and the fix is unglamorous. Shadow Protection Potions, a Cauldron of Major Shadow Protection, Hearts of Darkness for crafted resistance pieces, and the Medallion of Karabor as a resistance neck. Warlocks tanking Illidan’s Demon Phase need their own resistance set on top. Start collecting materials now. Auction house prices on Primal Shadow climb the moment the phase lands.

The full breakdown of every encounter, the attunement questline quest by quest and the BiS loot table lives in our Black Temple raid guide.

Battle for Mount Hyjal: Waves, Not Trash

Mount Hyjal replaces trash packs with a siege. Before each of the first four bosses, eight waves of Scourge assault the base camp you’re defending. Ghouls, Abominations, Necromancers, Banshees, Gargoyles, Crypt Fiends and Frost Wyrms, in escalating mixes. Bosses one and two happen at Jaina’s Alliance base, three and four at Thrall’s. Archimonde waits past both, at the World Tree.

What decides Hyjal nights

  • Mana management, not mechanics. Healers who sprint the early waves crawl into wave eight empty, exactly when the boss spawns. Drink in every gap.
  • Protect the base NPC. If Jaina or Thrall dies, the encounter resets and the waves start over.
  • Rage Winterchill through Azgalor escalate steadily: Icebolt freezes, Towering Infernals spawn, Mark of Kaz’rogal drains mana into explosions, Doom spawns Doomguards every 45 seconds.
  • Archimonde punishes individual mistakes. Everyone carries Tears of the Goddess from the Ancient before the pull. It negates Air Burst fall damage, and forgetting it kills more raiders than the boss does.

Bring Free Action Potions and Nightmare Seeds for the wave phases. Both save more attempts than extra gear does. Full tactics for all five bosses, the Vials of Eternity chain and the complete 78-item loot table are in the Mount Hyjal raid guide.

Fast Alt Gearing and Fresh 70s for Phase 3

Phase 3 is the best window of the Anniversary run to bring an alt up. Tier 6 raids pull the whole gear curve behind them. A character starting now has a realistic path to raid-ready before the phase settles.

The fastest route from fresh 70 to raid-ready

  • Hit 70 first. Everything below assumes max level, and every day spent leveling after launch is a day of missed raid IDs.
  • Spam Normal and Heroic dungeons for Badges of Justice. Badge gear is the backbone of pre-raid BiS, and nobody rolls against you for it.
  • Fill gaps with crafted and reputation pieces. Aldor or Scryers shoulder enchants, Cenarion Expedition and Sha’tar rewards, crafted BiS from the armor professions.
  • Finish the attunements last. They cost days, not gear — do them while your item level catches up.

One reported change makes this easier: Heroic dungeon reputation requirements are said to be dropping to Honored in Phase 3, alongside relaxed Phase 2 attunement requirements. That’s catch-up easing Blizzard has done before at tier transitions. If it lands, gearing an alt through Heroics gets noticeably faster. Starting from scratch? A TBC leveling boost gets the character to 70 while you play your main.

Rumor: Raid Loot in Heroic Dungeons (Unconfirmed)

This section is speculation, not fact. Blizzard has not confirmed any of it. Treat everything below as community rumor until the official Phase 3 patch notes are published.

The most interesting thing circulating about Phase 3 is a rumor that Heroic dungeons may begin dropping raid loot from earlier phases. That would mean items from the Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, Magtheridon, Serpentshrine and Tempest Keep tiers appearing in the Heroic pool. Nothing official supports this yet. It’s still worth understanding why it would matter, because it would change how you spend the first week.

Why the rumor matters if it turns out true

  • BiS trinkets outside raid lockouts. The headline example is the Dragonspine Trophy, historically a Gruul’s Lair drop and a top-tier melee trinket. Farming it through Heroics instead of one weekly Gruul kill would shift things for every physical DPS still chasing it.
  • Alt catch-up without the raid ladder. Fresh 70s could reach raid-ready item level through Heroics, instead of working up through every previous tier.
  • Badge and gold value. Anything that makes Heroics the efficient gearing route makes stockpiled Badges of Justice and gold worth more the day it goes live.

What to do about it right now: nothing expensive. Bank Badges instead of spending them on marginal upgrades, keep some gold liquid, and have any alt you care about sitting at 70 ready to run dungeons. All three are useful even if the rumor turns out to be nothing. That’s exactly why they’re worth doing before the patch notes arrive.

Arena Season 3 and PvP Preparation

Arena Season 3 is reported to start in early September, about a week after the raids open. That gap is your preparation window.

TBC Anniversary Arena Season 3 — gear, ratings and the Gladiator ladder⤢ Click to enlarge

  • Cap your Honor and save marks now. Both convert into the new season’s entry gear the moment it opens.
  • Season 2 gear gets discounted and loses its rating requirements when Season 3 begins. That’s the cheapest way to close gear gaps on an alt or a new arena character.
  • Spend Arena Points before the season ends. Unspent points convert to Honor at the rollover, so anything you were saving for should be bought first.
  • Armor penetration gains value as Tier 6 raises everyone’s gear level, shifting what’s worth gemming for.

Comp choice matters more than gear at the top of the ladder. Our breakdown of the best TBC arena comps covers what holds up in 2v2 and 3v3. For players chasing the title without the partner hunt, there’s the TBC Gladiator boost.

Netherwing and the Netherdrake Mounts

The Netherwing daily hub opens with Phase 3, and it’s a long grind that starts before it starts. Reaching Exalted with the Netherwing takes weeks of dailies in Shadowmoon Valley. Only then does Drake Dealer Hurlunk sell the drakes — five colors, one of the expansion’s most recognizable mount sets. The prerequisites are worth handling early: flying, Shadowmoon Valley access and the introductory chain all gate the dailies themselves.

Netherwing Drake Mount Boost Exalted with the Netherwing and the drake of your choice — the daily grind handled while you raid. Get the drake

Economy and Professions Before Launch

Phase 3 moves the economy more than any patch since launch. Epic gems arrive, mined from nodes in Mount Hyjal and dropped by Black Temple trash. The Jewelcrafting designs to cut them come from Indormi, with Scale of the Sands reputation. Mining and Jewelcrafting at 375 both become genuinely profitable overnight. On the consumable side, melee want Flask of Relentless Assault. The Elixir of Demon Slaying is worth stockpiling specifically, since both raids are demon-heavy and its bonus applies to most of what you’ll kill.

Phase 3 Prep Checklist

Ranked by what actually blocks you on launch day:

Priority Task Why It Matters
Mandatory Kill Lady Vashj and Kael’thas Both drop the vial remnants the Hyjal attunement needs
Mandatory Complete the Black Temple attunement chain No medallion, no entry — and the chain takes days
High Build Shadow Resistance gear and potions Mother Shahraz is a hard SR wall for the whole raid
High Cap Honor and spend Arena Points Unspent points convert at the season rollover
Medium Bank Badges of Justice and gold Useful anyway, and decisive if the Heroic loot rumor is true
Medium Get alts to 70 and dungeon-ready Phase 3 is the best catch-up window of the Anniversary run
Medium Start Netherwing prerequisites The Exalted grind is weeks long once the hub opens
Optional Push Mining and Jewelcrafting to 375 Epic gems make both professions immediately profitable

Three Weeks Is Enough — Barely

Everything on that checklist is achievable before August 27. Almost none of it is achievable during launch week. Attunement chains don’t compress. Vashj and Kael’thas don’t die faster because you’re in a hurry, and Shadow Resistance materials only get pricier as the date nears. Start with the two mandatory rows this week. Then Phase 3 opens with you inside the temple, not in Shadowmoon Valley running errands.

FAQ

When does TBC Anniversary Phase 3 release?

Phase 3 is reported to launch on Thursday, August 27, 2026, with Arena Season 3 following in early September. Those dates come from community reporting rather than an official Blizzard post, so treat them as expected until the schedule is confirmed.

What does Phase 3 add?

Two raids — Black Temple with nine bosses and the Battle for Mount Hyjal with five — plus the start of the Tier 6 gearing era, Arena Season 3, the Netherwing daily hub with its drakes, and epic gems entering the economy.

What are the Phase 3 attunements?

Mount Hyjal needs The Vials of Eternity: Revered with the Keepers of Time plus vial remnants from Lady Vashj and Kael’thas. Black Temple needs its own chain through Shadowmoon Valley, ending with the Medallion of Karabor. Both take days, so start before launch.

Will Heroic dungeons drop raid loot in Phase 3?

It’s rumored, not confirmed. If it turns out true, items like the Dragonspine Trophy could become farmable through Heroics instead of weekly raid lockouts, and alts could gear far faster. Blizzard has not announced anything, so treat it as speculation until the patch notes appear.

What's the fastest way to gear an alt for Phase 3?

Reach 70 first, then spam Normal and Heroic dungeons for Badges of Justice, fill remaining slots with crafted and reputation gear, and finish the attunements last. Reported catch-up easing — Heroic reputation requirements dropping to Honored — should make that route quicker.

Do I need Shadow Resistance gear for Black Temple?

Yes. Mother Shahraz is a hard Shadow Resistance check for the whole raid, and Warlocks tanking Illidan’s Demon Phase need their own resistance set. Plan for Shadow Protection Potions, a Cauldron of Major Shadow Protection, crafted resistance pieces and the Medallion of Karabor as a resistance neck.

When does Arena Season 3 start?

Around September 1, roughly a week after the raids open — again reported rather than officially confirmed. Before it begins, cap your Honor, save marks and spend leftover Arena Points, since unspent points convert to Honor at the rollover.
