Frost Mage is the undisputed S-Tier pick for TBC Anniversary Season 3 arena. No other specialization combines this much crowd control, this much burst into frozen targets, and two full defensive resets in one match. Cold Snap alone hands you a second Ice Block, Frost Nova and Water Elemental. This guide covers the Season 3 talent build, BiS gear, the comps that win, and the mechanics that separate a 1900 Mage from a Gladiator one.

Mage PvP at a Glance — TBC Anniversary Season 3
Best PvP Mage Races in TBC Anniversary Season 3
Racial abilities decide more arena games than most players expect, and for a Mage they directly answer the class’s biggest weakness — being caught by melee.
Gnome — Best Alliance Race
The premier Alliance pick. Escape Artist is an instant snare and root break on a 1.75-minute cooldown. It keeps you kiting against Rogues, Warriors and Druids without burning Blink. You also gain Expansive Mind for a larger mana pool, which matters in long dampening games.
Undead — Best Horde Race
The top Horde option for survival. Will of the Forsaken breaks Fear, Charm and Sleep instantly, which is a direct counter to Warlocks, Discipline Priests and mirror Mages. Passive Shadow Resistance mitigates incoming Shadow damage on top.
Human — The Anti-Stealth Pick
Exceptional against stealth compositions. Perception boosts stealth detection for 20 seconds. You spot Subtlety Rogues and Feral Druids before they land a clean opener. Humans also gain The Human Spirit for +10% Spirit.
Best PvP Mage Builds & Talents in TBC Anniversary Season 3
The Season 3 Frost setup takes critical utility from the Arcane tree — specifically Improved Counterspell for a mandatory 4-second silence. The remaining 44 points go into Frost for control, defensive resets and shatter burst.
1. Standard Frost PvP Build — 17 / 0 / 44
The gold-standard arena setup for Season 3, with unmatched kite potential against physical teams and full spell lockdown against casters.

What the tree secures
- Defensive core. Ice Barrier absorbs damage and stops cast pushback. Cold Snap resets your Frost cooldowns instantly.
- Offensive core. 5/5 Shatter with Icy Veins pumps crit-heavy burst into frozen targets during tight setup windows.
- Utility core. Improved Counterspell turns your interrupt into a full silence that lands even when the target is not casting.
2. PoM Pyro Burst Build — 34 / 27 / 0 (5v5 Nuke)
Frost dominates 2v2 and 3v3 through control, but the 34/27/0 PoM Pyro build is the hyper-offensive alternative for fast 5v5 compositions. It sacrifices defensive resets like Ice Block to maximize raw instant damage.

How the build kills
- The PoM Pyro combo. Presence of Mind plus Pyroblast turns a 6-second cast into an instant fire bomb. Add Arcane Power for +30% spell damage and the opener becomes explosive.
- Critical multipliers. Arcane Instability raises crit chance and crit damage together. Any crit then triggers 5/5 Ignite for an extra 40% as damage over time.
- Instant utility. 1/1 Blast Wave is instant fire AoE with a daze. 5/5 Impact gives every fire spell a 10% chance to stun for 2 seconds.
Key Talents & Spells
- Ice Barrier — primary absorb. Soaks physical and magical damage, prevents cast pushback, keeps you casting under pressure.
- Cold Snap — the ultimate reset. Every Frost cooldown finishes instantly: a second Ice Block, Frost Nova, Ice Barrier and Water Elemental.
- Improved Counterspell — interrupt plus 4-second full silence, and it silences even a target who is not casting.
- Summon Water Elemental — extra ranged damage plus a targeted root via Freeze, so you trigger Shatter combos from safety.
- Icy Veins — +20% cast speed and 100% pushback protection for 20 seconds.
- Frost Nova — instant AoE root. Sets up Shatter windows or peels melee off your partner.
- Ice Lance — instant finisher dealing triple damage to frozen targets.
- Blink — 20 yards instantly, and it breaks existing stuns and roots.
Professions
Jewelcrafting is the premier Mage profession in Season 3, providing character-bound epic gems for a raw spell damage advantage. Stack Spell Power in red sockets, balance Resilience with Spell Hit in yellow. Enchanting is the mandatory second. Enchant Ring – Spellpower adds +12 Spell Power per ring — an undispellable +24 available no other way.
Mage PvP BiS Gear — Season 3
Frost Mage gearing in Season 3 balances arena vendor pieces against a handful of raid items that beat them outright. Get the stat priority right first — several thresholds are hard requirements, not preferences.
Stat Priority
In order, and the first two are non-negotiable
- 3% Spell Hit cap. A missed Polymorph or resisted Counterspell costs the match. Cap it so your control always lands.
- Spell Penetration (40+). 40 to 70 bypasses passive resistances like Mark of the Wild, Shadow Protection and Felhunter auras. Below that, Frostbolts and sheep resist at random.
- Spell Damage. Raw spell power scales the entire kit and drives the burst into frozen targets during Shatter windows.
- Resilience (350+). Roughly 350-400 blunts incoming crit and burst, so you survive double-DPS openers without spending Ice Block early.
- Spell Crit. Shatter already supplies enormous crit on frozen targets, so extra crit raises your baseline damage during Icy Veins pushes.

Mage PvP Matchups — What Beats You and What You Beat
Frost Mage has no truly losing matchup in Season 3. What changes is how you win, depending on who is across the arena.
| Opponent | Difficulty | How the fight is won |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue | Hard | Pre-cast Invisibility to flush the opener, tag into combat to deny Sap, and save Blink for Kidney Shot rather than distance |
| Warrior | Moderate | Pure kiting. Frost Nova into max range, force Charge and Intercept early, then Cold Snap for a second Nova when they reset |
| Warlock | Moderate | Spellsteal every buff on sight, use Ice Block to eat Death Coil, and silence during their Fear cast rather than after |
| Mirror Mage | Moderate | Decided by Counterspell discipline and who lands the first sheep. Fake-cast constantly and never open with a full Frostbolt |
| Discipline Priest | Moderate | Bait Shadow Word: Death with a juke, then silence into the sheep. Mana pressure wins the long version |
| Druid | Easier | Root breaks matter most — Escape Artist or Blink out of Entangling Roots, then Polymorph through their travel form |
| Paladin | Easier | Spellsteal Blessing of Freedom immediately and Ice Block their Hammer of Justice when trinket is down |
Best Mage Arena Comps in TBC Anniversary Season 3
Frost Mage fits into top-tier setups across every bracket. The class is the control and setup backbone, so partners are chosen to maximize crowd control chains, shatter burst and fast target swaps.
2v2 Comps
RM — Rogue / Frost Mage · S-Tier, best 2v2
- The premier double-DPS setup and one of the most dominant comps in WoW PvP history, built on speed, mobility and burst.
- The Mage calls targets. Lock one enemy in Polymorph while the Rogue opens on the other, then freeze and shatter the kill target.
- No healer means every mistake is fatal — this comp wins on tempo, not attrition.
MP — Frost Mage / Discipline Priest · S-Tier, high control
- Outstanding survivability and mana pressure. The Priest adds damage, purges and Mana Burn to starve enemy healers.
- Flawless CC chains starting with Polymorph turn long games into a resource war you are built to win.
3v3 Comps
RMP — Rogue / Frost Mage / Discipline Priest · S-Tier 3v3
- The undisputed top 3v3 composition for Frost Mage and a mainstay since TBC launch.
- Unmatched mobility paired with top-tier defensive resets and layered crowd control.
- The Mage directs match tempo — peeling for allies, anchoring targets with freezes and setting up rapid swaps.
MLP — Mage / Warlock / Discipline Priest (Wizardcleave) · S-Tier, high pressure
- Massive sustained damage and explosive burst, with double magic purge via Spellsteal and Dispel Magic.
- Warlock Fear layered with sheep chains creates overwhelming pressure and free swap windows.
Mage PvP Tips & Advanced Mechanics
Gear and comp get you to 1800. Everything below is what takes a Frost Mage past it.
Control, Fake-Casting & Anti-CC
- Fake-casting and juking. Cancel Polymorph or Frostbolt at 70-80% to bait Kick or Pummel. Juking a Discipline Priest forces an early Shadow Word: Death, leaving them open for a clean sheep.
- Fire school baiting. If the enemy refuses to fall for fakes, throw Scorch or Fire Blast. Getting locked out in Fire leaves your Frost school completely free.
- Flat Counterspell usage. Do not hold it purely as an interrupt. A flat 4-second silence on the enemy healer during an execution window guarantees they cannot save their teammate.
- Catching spells in Ice Block. An Ice Block cancelaura macro immunes a Warlock’s Death Coil or a Paladin’s Hammer of Justice when your trinket is down. Break out immediately to keep pressure.
Defensive Kiting & Invisibility Plays
- Invisibility as a pre-emptive Vanish. Casting Invisibility while targeted forces incoming projectiles to lose their lock.
- Stealth flush against Rogues. Cast Invisibility and stand directly on your teammate. When the Rogue opens with Sap, breaking it reveals him next to you rather than behind you.
- Pre-Blink stun prediction. Anticipate Kidney Shot or a Warrior stun and Blink exactly as it lands — you break it instantly and gain 20 yards before the follow-up connects.
- Combat tagging against Sap. If a teammate enters combat while a Rogue is stealthed, cast a cheap buff like Arcane Intellect on them. Tagging into combat makes you immune to Sap.
- Shield uptime and max range. Keep 100% uptime on Ice Barrier, with Mana Shield as backup. Play at 30 yards so melee burn mobility just to reach you.
Advanced Arena Mechanics & Focus Management
- Focus frame mastery. Set your primary CC target as Focus and run Focus Polymorph and Focus Counterspell macros. Control lands without ever dropping your kill target.
- Rank 1 Frostbolt fishing. Rank 1 Frostbolt casts in 1.5 seconds for almost no mana. It applies an instant slow while baiting interrupts and fishing for procs.
- Arcane Missiles through line of sight. Start Arcane Missiles as a target rounds a pillar. Once the channel begins, the missiles bend around geometry at full damage.
- Relentless Spellsteal. Strip Blessing of Freedom, Power Infusion and enemy HoTs constantly. Every purge removes a defensive layer and buffs your own offense.
Play the Setup, Not the Damage
Frost Mage wins arenas by deciding when the fight happens. Every freeze, sheep and silence exists to create one window where your team gets a free kill. Every defensive reset exists to survive until that window arrives. Gear caps and comp choice matter, but the Mages who reach Gladiator set up the kill rather than chase it.
