Gruul and Magtheridon Raids in TBC Anniversary
With the launch of TBC Anniversary, early raid content returned in its post-nerf state. Both Gruul’s Lair and Magtheridon’s Lair are considered entry-level 25-man raids, but mistakes in positioning or assignments can still cause wipes.
These encounters test coordination, interrupts, threat control, and positioning. Clean execution matters more than raw gear.

Gruul’s Lair Raid Overview in TBC Anniversary
Located in Blade’s Edge Mountains (46.6, 52.8), Gruul’s Lair contains two boss encounters and minimal trash in TBC Anniversary. Despite the small size, both fights require discipline and role awareness.
Trash Packs
You will encounter:
- Gronn-Priest – casts Heal, Renew, and Psychic Scream. Interrupt Heal immediately.
- Lair Brute – uses Cleave. Tanks must face them away from the raid.
Clear one pack at a time to avoid unnecessary pressure.
High King Maulgar Boss Strategy
Gruul and his ogre cronies are a classic test of your raid’s positioning, threat management, and raw output. You will face two encounters here. The first boss is High King Maulgar, accompanied by four council members (This is a five-target encounter requiring separate tanks):
| NPC | Class | Strategy & Tank Assignment |
| Mage | Tanked by a Mage. Your Mage must use Spellsteal to take Krosh’s Fire Ward to survive his massive Fireballs. Move into melee range initially to force him to stand still, then step back. | |
| Warlock | Tanked by a Warlock/Off-Tank. Olm summons a Felhunter (Darkhound). Have your raid’s Warlock use Subjugate Demon on it and use the pet to tank Olm and manage his Dark Decay debuff. | |
| Shaman | Tanked by a Balance Druid (Moonkin) or Ranged. Kiggler spams Polymorph. Moonkin form is immune to Polymorph, making this an effortless tanking job. | |
| Priest | Tanked by a Paladin/Off-Tank. Needs to be interrupted constantly so he cannot heal his allies. Break his shield instantly when it pops. |
Recommended kill order:
Blindeye → Olm → Krosh → Kiggler → Maulgar
Note: At 50% HP, Maulgar enrages, gaining Intimidating Roar (Fear) and Charge. Keep Tremor Totems down and have an off-tank ready to intercept him if he charges the ranged group.
Phase 2 – Maulgar at 50%
At 50%, Maulgar gains Frenzy, increasing attack speed and damage. He uses:
Keep him faced away from the raid. Tanks must be ready to Taunt after Charge. Save defensive cooldowns for this phase.
Loot includes Tier 4 shoulders:
Gruul the Dragonkiller Boss Strategy
The second boss is Gruul the Dragonkiller. Gruul is a positioning and threat-check boss. You have 7 minutes to kill him before his stacking “Growth” buff makes him hit too hard to survive.
Main mechanics of Gruul Boss in WoW TBC Anniversary:
He applies Growth, increasing his damage over time. This creates a soft enrage.
Hateful Strike: Gruul will always hit the player with the second-highest threat in melee range. Your Off-Tank (or a very beefy plate DPS) must stay #2 on the threat meter at all times to soak these massive hits. Ranged DPS do not need to worry about this.
Cave In: Rocks fall from the ceiling. Zoom your camera all the way out and simply sidestep the AoE.
The core mechanics are Ground Slam & Shatter: Gruul knocks everyone back and applies a heavy slow, turning you to stone. When you shatter, you deal damage to anyone near you. Spread out at least 8+ yards apart. Note: Hunter/Warlock pets count as players for this damage, so keep them positioned carefully!
Reverberation: An AoE silence lasting 4 seconds. Healers: Pre-cast your Heal-over-Time (HoT) spells on the tanks right before this goes out, and bring Super Mana Potions for this long fight.
- Melee must stay at max melee range and spread around the boss. Ranged DPS spread evenly across the room.
- Healers prepare for long fight duration. Use mana potions early.

Magtheridon’s Lair Overview
Defeating our old Warcraft III nemesis requires strict coordination and an unusual raid comp in WoW TBC Anniversary Phase 1 is: 5 Tanks, 8 Healers, and 12 DPS. Magtheridon’s Lair contains a single encounter: Magtheridon.
This fight has three phases.
Phase 1: Hellfire Channelers
Five Hellfire Channelers mobs channel on Magtheridon.
They cast:
Assign one tank to each Channeler. Spread them out or cleave them down if your kicks are perfect.
Warlocks: Maintain Curse of Tongues on all Channelers 100% of the time.
Interrupts: You must rigorously kick Dark Mending (Heal) and Shadow Bolt Volley.
Warning: When a Channeler dies, the survivors get stronger. All five must be dead before the 2-minute mark.
Phase 2: Magtheridon Unleashed
At the 2-minute mark, Magtheridon breaks free. The Main Tank must instantly grab him and face him toward the wall to protect the raid from his Cleave.
The Cube Mechanic (Blast Nova): Magtheridon will cast Blast Nova, which will wipe the raid if successful.
- There are 5 Manticron Cubes around the room.
- To interrupt the boss, 5 players must click the cubes simultaneously. (Tip: Double-tap Escape to drop your target, click the cube, and do not move while channeling).
- Clicking a cube gives you a debuff, preventing you from clicking again for 3 minutes. The Raid Leader must set a strict 4-person rotation per cube.
During cube channeling, Magtheridon takes increased damage. Use Bloodlust/Heroism here or at 30–35%.
Phase 3: Collapse (30%)
At 30%, the room begins to collapse. Magtheridon stuns the raid and shatters the lair.
He casts Quake, knocking players down. Debris falls from the ceiling. Watch for falling rocks and move instantly.
Continue cube coordination and finish the boss.
Magtheridon drops Tier 4 chest tokens for every class:
