The Importance of Early Attunement in TBC Anniversary
In the TBC Anniversary version of the game, the raiding community moves at a rapid pace. While World Bosses and early dungeons are accessible to everyone, Karazhan remains behind a strict “attunement gate.” You cannot enter the tower without The Master’s Key, and unlike other versions of the game, every individual in your 10-man raid must have finished this journey. Furthermore, the reputation you gain with The Violet Eye – Faction during this process is essential for obtaining the best-in-slot rings for the TBC Anniversary endgame.
Phase 1: The Initial Investigation (Level 68+)
The TBC Anniversary journey begins as early as level 68. We recommend starting early to avoid the level 70 bottleneck at the tower. Below we will present all the locations with quests that you will need for Attunement Karazhan in TBC Anniversary:
Deadwind Pass Location
Begin your journey by visiting Archmage Alturus located directly outside the gates of Karazhan. While the quest is not mandatory at level 70, starting at 68 allows you to gain a head start on the required dungeon chains.
Exploring the Karazhan Cellars
Accept the quests Arcane Disturbances / Restless Activity. You must enter the underground cellars near the tower. Use your Violet Scrying Crystal at both the underground pond and the well. You are required to gather 10 Ghostly Essences; ensure you eliminate monsters on your way in and out of the caves to collect these efficiently.
Journey to Dalaran and Shattrath City
After completing the cellar tasks, report back to Alturus. He will instruct you to travel to the Alterac Mountain to locate Archmage Cedric NPC near the Dalaran Crater.
Cedric will immediately direct you to Khadgar in the Terrace of Light within Shattrath City. He explains that the tower key has been shattered into three fragments hidden within high-level Outland dungeons.
Phase 2: The Dungeon Fragment Hunt
In the TBC Anniversary season, these dungeons are frequently run, making it easy to find a team. Each piece is located in a secret container; when opened, a Fragment Guardian appears that must be defeated in order to obtain the key fragment.
The First Piece – Shadow Labyrinth
Located in the Auchindoun complex, First Fragment is found in the Shadow Labyrinth. Note that you must first obtain the Shadow Labyrinth Key from the chest following the final boss of Sethekk Halls dungeon. The fragment container is located directly behind the boss Murmur.
The Second Piece – The Steamvault
Second Fragment is hidden in The Steamvault within Zangarmarsh. Perhaps the easiest piece to obtain; you just need to clear a few groups of enemies and dive into the water near the first boss Hydromancer Thespia to get the container. Players do not need to finish the entire dungeon to complete this step.
The Third Piece – The Arcatraz
The final piece – Third Fragment resides in The Arcatraz location in Netherstorm. This dungeon requires a flying mount to reach. The container is found in the room populated by void walkers, situated just before the final boss encounter.
Note: Entry requires the Key to the Arcatraz or a Rogue with 350 Lockpicking skills.
Phase 3: The Caverns of Time
This is the most time-consuming part of the TBC Anniversary attunement. You must go back in time to meet Medivh at the The Opening of the Dark Portal – Quest.
Escape from Durnholde
Before you can access the final trial, you must complete the Thrall escort within the Old Hillsbrad Foothills dungeon. This is a mandatory prerequisite for all TBC Anniversary progression.
The Black Morass Trial
Once the hills of Old Hillsbrad are cleared, enter The Black Morass. Your objective is to defend Medivh against 18 waves of the Infinite Dragonflight while he opens the portal. Failure to protect him will require a full reset of the encounter.
Receiving The Master’s Key in Shattrath
Immediately following the 18th wave, speak to Medivh to turn in The Master’s Touch. He will enchant your fragments, allowing you to return to Khadgar in Shattrath. Khadgar will then provide you with the completed The Master’s Key, officially attuning you to the Karazhan raid.
Nightbane and Tier 5 Progression in TBC Anniversary
Your work doesn’t end with the key. In the TBC Anniversary meta, you will eventually need to summon Nightbane. This requires reaching Honored reputation with the Violet Eye and completing Heroic dungeon tasks. Defeating Nightbane is required to earn the Blazing Signet, which is a core requirement for entering Serpentshrine Cavern.
