Hall of Thanes is a new WoW Forever dungeon for levels 13–18, dug into the tomb of the old dwarf kings under Ironforge. Four bosses. Door opens at roughly level 10, and the whole thing goes live with the game on November 4, 2026.

The plot? Dark Iron dwarves tunneled into a crypt full of dead kings. Ironforge is not amused. Below you get the stuff players actually ask about, from the walk to the door to the loot and the next stop after the last boss.

The boss list comes from the beta, which closed on October 21. Blizzard reworked items during that test, so a name or a drop can still change on live servers.

Where Is Hall of Thanes?

The Great Forge of Ironforge, with warm molten metal and a cold blue side passage.

Hall of Thanes lies under Ironforge in Dun Morogh, which makes it the nearest new instance for any dwarf or gnome.

On the beta the door was inside the city itself, next to the High Seat where the king sits, and a path led from there down into the older halls. Blizzard has published no map, but nothing suggests the entrance moves for launch.

Humans have a short trip too. The Deeprun Tram links Stormwind and Ironforge, and a level 12 human can be at the door in a few minutes. Night elves pay the most. They sail across from Darkshore to the Wetlands and then walk north, so it is worth bundling that trip with other Eastern Kingdoms quests.

The crypt itself is a royal one. Thanes were the old dwarven lords, and this is where Ironforge buried them. Expect stone halls, old dwarven graves and Dark Iron intruders rather than the usual cave full of kobolds.

What Level Do You Need for Hall of Thanes?

You can enter Hall of Thanes from about level 10, but the dungeon is built for levels 13–18, and that window gives the most from it.

WoW Forever has no level scaling. A level 25 character walks through the tomb without effort and leaves with gear it has already replaced. Come too early and the pulls hurt. Around 14 or 15 is the sweet spot.

Experience is the other reason to time it well. In WoW Forever the dungeon quests carry a large share of the XP from a run, while Blizzard kept tuning mob XP on the beta (on October 8 it went up by about a fifth). So pick up the quests before you go in. A run without them is mostly loot.

The game also has a hard floor. A character under the minimum level simply cannot enter, so a level 8 alt waiting at the portal is wasting its time.

Hall of Thanes Bosses

Hall of Thanes has four bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer.

Blizzard has not posted an official encounter guide for the new dungeons. What follows is what beta testers reported after the October item rework, so treat spellings and abilities as provisional until the game is live.

BossWhat testers report
Faldrim AnvilmarA ghostly dwarf who wanders his own tomb. His Mind Blast can be interrupted, so keep a kick ready.
MagmatusShows up together with a Dark Iron Summoner. Groups kill the Summoner first, then keep Magmatus and his Fire Nova away from the casters.
PlunderA golem fight in the room before the end. His Knock Away throws people back, so fight with a wall behind you.
Durgen DirgehammerThe last boss, flanked by two Lesser Stone Golems. He fears the party with Intimidating Shout and puts Rend on the tank. Most groups drop the golems before him.

A small detail for dwarf players: Anvilmar is also the name of the dwarf and gnome starting village, so Faldrim's family name should ring a bell.

Four bosses is a short instance. For comparison, the Horde's starter dungeon has six, so Hall of Thanes is the quicker of the two.

Hall of Thanes Loot: How the Loot Table Works

Illustrated Hall of Thanes loot based on the verified icons of Durgen's Crescent Axe, Fang of Magmatus and Golemheart Stave.

Every Hall of Thanes boss drops its own unique items, and in WoW Forever unique dungeon boss loot is blue quality.

That last part matters a lot at level 15. In the original game a level 15 character mostly wore greens. Here one clear can put two or three blue pieces on a fresh character. Old Classic loot lists won't help much either. Blizzard went through dungeon drops all over the game and added hundreds of new ones.

Two rules change how groups split the drops:

  • Appearances are shared. Say a bind-on-pickup green or blue drops. Its look goes to everyone in the group who was eligible to loot it. Nobody has to roll against the player who needs the stats just to keep the look.
  • Transmog is opt-in. You decide whether you want to use the collected looks at all.

Here is the loot table as beta players logged it after the October rework. Each boss had a pool of three items:

BossBeta drops
Faldrim AnvilmarAetherwisp Bracers (cloth wrist), Ephemeral Choker (neck), Spiritwraith Drape (back)
MagmatusFang of Magmatus (dagger), Flamefist Grips (leather hands), Kindlegem Girdle (mail waist)
PlunderGolemheart Stave (staff), Golemguard Chest (mail chest), Treads of the Protector Golem (mail feet)
Durgen DirgehammerDurgen's Crescent Axe (one-hand axe), Direhammer Leggings (leather legs), Robes of the Disgraced Thane (cloth chest)

Casters come out well. The dagger from Magmatus and the staff from Plunder both suit a mage, priest or warlock, and the axe off the last boss is the piece melee players talk about most. Stats on low-level blues tend to move right before launch, so check the live tooltips before you farm one item.

One more loot source is worth knowing. Advanced camp objects for professions come from Blueprint recipes that specific dungeon bosses drop. Blizzard has not said which bosses carry them. In the Horde's starter dungeon, beta players found Alchemy and Enchanting Blueprints on Rath'mael. Nothing like that has been confirmed for Hall of Thanes yet.

Hall of Thanes Quests

Hall of Thanes has about five quests, and most of them are Alliance-only in the beta data.

Collect them before the first pull. Honestly, the quests are the real XP here. Hand them in together and the rewards cover slots the bosses never drop.

Can Horde Players Run Hall of Thanes?

Yes. Horde characters can enter Hall of Thanes, but first they have to get through Ironforge, and that is an enemy capital full of guards.

It is also a Horde-only trip. Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together in WoW Forever, so a Horde party arrives all-Horde and fights its way down. Most will not bother. The Horde has its own version at almost the same level: Ruins of Lordaeron, levels 15–20, in the ruined capital above Undercity. Its six bosses are Witherfang, The Baron, Viktor the Vile, The Abandoned, Bjork and Rath'mael. Playing Horde? Then a Ruins of Lordaeron boost is the same step of the climb, just on your side of the map.

How Long Is a Hall of Thanes Run?

A full Hall of Thanes clear takes about 20–30 minutes once the group knows the layout. Your first blind run will take longer.

Launch week is the harder part. Everyone starts on November 4, and the first evenings will be crowded around Ironforge. If you would rather not spend them in group chat, you can order a Hall of Thanes boost now, and the runs start on launch day once your character reaches the entry level. The booster reports in the order chat and sends a screenshot after the last clear.

Where to Go After Hall of Thanes

After Hall of Thanes most Alliance characters move on to the original dungeons of the late teens and 20s, then to the next new instances around level 26.

Wailing Caverns15–25Original

The original dungeons all stay in WoW Forever next to the nine new ones. That is covered in our WoW Forever overview. To compare every instance with its run time, open the WoW Forever dungeon boost page. And if you want the whole road to 60 played through instances, dungeon leveling in WoW Forever is the order built for it.

FAQ

Where is Hall of Thanes in WoW Forever?

Hall of Thanes is under Ironforge in Dun Morogh, inside the old tomb of the dwarf kings. Alliance players reach it from their own capital. Horde players have to cross Ironforge first, which is a long and hostile trip.

What level is Hall of Thanes?

Hall of Thanes is a level 13–18 dungeon. You can enter from about level 10, but the quests and loot pay off most around levels 14–16. WoW Forever has no level scaling, so going much later turns the run into a walk with little reward.

How many bosses are in Hall of Thanes?

Hall of Thanes has 4 bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer, who ends the run. The names come from the beta build and can still change in spelling before launch.

What does Hall of Thanes drop?

Each Hall of Thanes boss drops three unique blue items in the beta data. Highlights are the Fang of Magmatus dagger, the Golemheart Stave from Plunder and Durgen's Crescent Axe from the last boss. Stats can still change at launch, and appearances of bind-on-pickup greens and blues go to every eligible looter.

Can Horde do Hall of Thanes?

Horde players can enter Hall of Thanes after getting through Ironforge, but they cannot bring Alliance friends because the factions do not group in WoW Forever. Most Horde characters run Ruins of Lordaeron instead, the Horde dungeon for levels 15–20.

How long is Hall of Thanes?

A full Hall of Thanes clear takes about 20–30 minutes for a group that knows the route. It is a short dungeon with four bosses, two fewer than Ruins of Lordaeron.
