Archaeology (or archeology, as half the community spells it) is WoW’s slowest profession and, for collectors, one of the most rewarding ones. It won’t earn you gold and it won’t help your raid team. What it offers instead is the only source of some of the rarest mounts, pets, transmog and toys in the game, including the ultra-rare Scepter of Azj’Aqir and the legendary-model sword Zin’rokh, Destroyer of Worlds. Nothing about the profession changed in Midnight, and the skill cap is still 950. That’s actually good news. This guide won’t go stale next patch, and everything you dig up now stays collectible forever. Here’s how the profession works, the fastest way to level archaeology from 1 to 950, every fragment race and keystone, and which artifacts are actually worth the shovel time. And if you’d rather skip straight to the digging-for-rares part, our WoW professions boost services handle the leveling grind for you.
What Is Archaeology in WoW?
Archaeology is a secondary profession, which means it doesn’t compete with your two primary professions. Any character of any class can learn it on top of everything else, the same way you pick up Cooking or Fishing. Learning it takes one visit to an Archaeology Trainer in any capital city. Can’t find one? Ask a city guard and a marker appears on your map.
Unlike gathering professions, archaeology has no nodes to compete for and no market to fight over. Everything you dig belongs to you. All significant rewards are Bind on Pickup, and nobody can snipe a dig site out from under you, sites are personal. It’s the most solitary, most patient activity in the game, and the collection you build with it can’t be bought with any amount of gold.
Ranks unlock at the trainer as your skill grows, so swing by every so often to keep your cap moving. The full ladder looks like this.
| Rank | Skill Range | Where to Learn |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 1–75 | Any capital trainer |
| Journeyman | 75–150 | Trainer, skill 50+ |
| Expert | 150–225 | Trainer, skill 125+ |
| Artisan | 225–300 | Trainer, skill 200+ |
| Master | 300–375 | Trainer, skill 275+ |
| Grand Master | 375–450 | Trainer, skill 350+ |
| Illustrious | 450–525 | Trainer, skill 425+ |
| Zen Master | 525–600 | Trainer, skill 500+ |
| Draenor Master | 600–700 | Trainer, skill 600 |
| Legion Master | 700–800 | Trainer in Dalaran (Legion) |
| Kul Tiran / Zandalari | 800–950 | Trainer in Boralus / Dazar’alor |
How Dig Sites and Surveying Work
At any moment, four dig sites are active for you on each continent, marked with a small shovel icon on the world map. Fly to one, stand anywhere inside its highlighted area, and cast Survey. A surveying scope appears on the ground with a colored light, and the scope’s direction points toward the buried fragment.
- Red light — the fragment is far away. Mount up and ride a long stretch in the direction the scope points.
- Yellow light — you’re in the middle band. Move a moderate distance and survey again.
- Green light — it’s close, usually one short hop from where you stand.
When you finally survey on top of the find, the fragments pop out and go straight into your Archaeology tab, no bag space needed. Each site holds several finds before it’s exhausted, and a fresh one spawns elsewhere on the continent. That respawn loop is the real grind. Archaeology leveling is a travel game, and everything in the route below is about cutting flight time. It also means you want a max-level character with full flying before you start — if yours isn’t there yet, a WoW leveling boost solves that part first.
Surveying Like a Veteran
- Triangulate instead of wandering. Note the scope’s exact direction, move far, and survey again. The two directions cross near the find. Two or three long, deliberate moves beat eight short panicked ones every time.
- Re-survey where you loot. Fragments cluster. After digging one up, cast Survey again on the spot, the next find is often a green light away.
- Hug the terrain features. Finds spawn in sensible spots: ruins, bones, exposed earth. If your scope points into a cliff face, the find is usually on top of it or at its base, not inside it.
- Queue with a purpose. Survey casting is instant with no cooldown, so spam it while moving short distances. Your bottleneck is travel, never the cast.
Fragments, Keystones and Every Archaeology Race
Fragments are sorted by the race that left them behind, and the continent you dig on decides which races you can collect. Alongside fragments, dig sites occasionally drop keystones, race-specific items that slot into a project and substitute for a chunk of fragments. Commons exist to be vendored; every race also hides a shortlist of rare projects, and those rares are the entire point of the profession.
| Race | Continent | Keystone | Headline Rare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dwarf | Eastern Kingdoms | Dwarf Rune Stone | Innkeeper’s Daughter (toy) |

Fastest Way to Level Archaeology 1-950
There’s no shortcut item, no catch-up mechanic and no way to buy progress in archaeology leveling. Skill comes from digging and solving, full stop. What you can optimize is geography, because travel eats 90% of your time. The route below keeps you on the most compact continent for every bracket.
| Skill | Where to Dig | Bracket Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1–300 | Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor | Pick the continent with your fastest travel. Solve everything, commons included, every solve is skill here. |
| 300–375 | Outland | Small continent, quick hops between Orc and Draenei sites. |
| 375–450 | Northrend | Nerubian and Vrykul digs at a steady pace; grab the Puzzle Box if it appears. |
| 450–525 | Cataclysm zones / Uldum | Tol’vir digs open up — start hoarding Tol’vir fragments and keystones now for the endgame rares. |
| 525–600 | Pandaria | Compact continent, three races, pleasant scenery for the mid-grind. |
| 600–700 | Draenor | Dense site layout and fast flight paths. |
| 700–800 | Broken Isles | The most compact continent in the game — see the note below. |
| 800–950 | Zandalar / Kul Tiras | Final stretch; Zandalari and Drust digs to the 950 cap. |
The Broken Isles Shortcut
Veterans of the grind all say the same thing: the Broken Isles are where archaeology stops hurting. Legion’s continent packs its dig sites closer together than anywhere else. Flight paths crisscross every zone, and site-to-site hops feel almost instant. Once your skill allows it, parking on the Broken Isles for as long as the bracket lets you is the fastest archaeology leveling real estate in the game. Some players stretch their Legion stay well past the on-paper bracket purely because the pace is so much better.
Rare Artifacts Worth Farming
Here’s the honest shopping list, everything below is Bind on Pickup, account-wide once created, and impossible to obtain any other way (with one alchemical exception). This is what the entire profession is for.
| Artifact | Type | Race | Worth the Grind? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scepter of Azj’Aqir | Mount | Tol’vir | The crown jewel — ultra-rare qiraji tank, instant respect in any city |
| Zin’rokh, Destroyer of Worlds | Transmog | Troll | Legendary-model two-hander; the best-looking sword archaeology has ever produced |
| Fossilized Raptor | Mount | Fossil | Skeletal raptor obtainable surprisingly early — many players’ first archaeology trophy |
| Crawling Claw | Pet | Tol’vir | The mummified monkey paw; a pet-collector staple |
| Canopic Jar | Recipe | Tol’vir | Alchemists can fish the Vial of the Sands recipe out of it — the two-seater dragon mount |
| Spirit of Eche’ro | Mount | Highmountain | Spectral moose; the reason to linger on the Broken Isles |
| Innkeeper’s Daughter | Toy | Dwarf | A second Hearthstone — real everyday utility, not just collection padding |
| Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron | Toy | Nerubian | Whispers of an Old God in your pocket; flavor item beloved by lore fans |
| Ultramarine Qiraji Battle Tank | Mount | Tol’vir (BfA) | The blue tank variant added with the 950 bracket |
| Fossilized Hatchling | Pet | Fossil | Baby version of the raptor; cheap fragments, early smile |
| Queen Azshara’s Dressing Gown | Transmog | Night Elf | Unique chest piece for cloth mog collectors |
| Nifflevar Bearded Axe | Transmog | Vrykul | Clean viking axe model for one-hand transmog |
Notice the pattern: Tol’vir is the money race. The Scepter, Zin’rokh’s troll cousin aside, the Crawling Claw and the Canopic Jar all come out of Uldum digs, which is why serious collectors spend most of their post-cap archaeology life rotating Uldum sites. We’ve broken down the troll blade separately in our Zin’rokh farming guide, and the drop logic is the same for every rare here: keep solving that race’s projects until the rare rotates into your queue. And if you’d rather skip the lottery, our Zin’rokh boost farms the blade for you, however long it takes.
Does Archaeology Make Gold?
Short answer: no, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Common artifacts vendor for pocket change, the rares are all Bind on Pickup, and there’s no market to play. The one genuine exception is the Canopic Jar: if you’re an alchemist, the Vial of the Sands recipe inside it crafts a mount that consistently sells for serious gold on most realms. That single recipe has paid for many players’ entire archaeology careers. Everything else you dig up pays you in collection points and bragging rights, and that’s the deal you accept when you pick up the trowel.
Best Addons for Archaeology
The default UI is workable but clunky, you’ll be opening the profession journal constantly. Two addons remove nearly all of that friction, and a third helps if you dig while doing other things.
- Minimal Archaeology — compresses the entire profession into one compact frame: fragment counts per race, solve buttons, keystone toggles and progress bars, no journal-diving. If you install only one addon, it’s this (and yes, the search finds it with either spelling, archeology included).
- TomTom — waypoint arrows to dig sites. Pairs with Minimal Archaeology to turn the loop into pure fly-survey-loot.
- GatherMate2 — if you gather herbs or ore while flying between sites, it keeps your detours efficient instead of chaotic.
What About Classic Versions?
If you’re playing MoP Classic rather than retail, the profession runs on the same survey-and-solve loop but caps at 600, uses the twelve original races through Pandaria, and adds the Lorewalkers faction plus Restored Artifacts turn-ins for targeted farming. The leveling route above applies up to the Pandaria bracket, and the Tol’vir rares, Zin’rokh included, are farmed the same way in Uldum. Everything else in this guide translates directly, just stop the table at 600.
Is Archaeology Worth It in Midnight?
For gold or player power, no, and it isn’t trying to be. For collectors, absolutely, and Midnight changes nothing about that math. The profession hasn’t received new content since Battle for Azeroth, which means no new grind ever gets stacked on top, the 950 cap is final, and every rare in the table above is a permanent fixture of the game. Archaeology is the one corner of WoW where your progress never expires and your luck never gets patched out. Level it once, park your character in Uldum, and let the collection grow between raid nights. And for everything else your character needs along the way, from leveling to mounts, our WoW character boost services have it covered.
