The Legendary staff, Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian
The Legendary staff, Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian, returns in WoW Classic Anniversary as one of the most demanding legendary questlines. It ties together the raids of Naxxramas and Ahn’Qiraj, culminating in a final showdown in Stratholme. This item attracts the attention of all caster classes, as it is Best in Slot (BiS) for them, and holds special value for guilds preparing for coordinated clears of the top raids. The path to the staff requires assembling forty shattered fragments, proving worth to the Bronze Dragonflight, and cleansing a powerful demonic presence before the staff is restored to its rightful form.
?♂️ Classes That Can Wield Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian
Only four caster classes can complete the quest chain and claim their version of the weapon:
-
Druids
-
Priests
-
Mages
-
Warlocks
The quest steps are shared, but the final stat allocation and bonuses differ by class.
? Note: Obtaining a legendary item like Atiesh is incredibly time-consuming. For fast progression and acquiring necessary BiS gear, many players opt to use services like the Anniversary Atiesh Boost or Classic Naxxramas Run Boost from trusted providers.
?️ Steps to Obtain Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian
Step 1: Collecting Splinters in Naxxramas
The journey begins in Naxxramas, where raid bosses can drop a Splinter of Atiesh.
-
Each splinter is bound‑on‑pickup (BoP) and cannot be traded. The raid must decide beforehand which player will gather them.
-
Because drops are not guaranteed from every boss, accumulating the required forty (40) pieces typically takes multiple full clears of the raid.
Once forty Splinters of Atiesh are collected, they can be combined via the spell Forming Frame of Atiesh. This item starts the quest Frame of Atiesh and marks the true beginning of the legendary chain.
Step 2: The Missing Fragments
The first quest directs the staff’s bearer to Anachronos, the Bronze Dragon, who resides at the entrance to the Caverns of Time in Tanaris.
-
To speak with Anachronos, a minimum of Neutral reputation with the Brood of Nozdormu is required, reflecting prior efforts in Ahn’Qiraj.
-
Upon examining the Frame of Atiesh, Anachronos reveals that the staff’s head and base remain lost. He offers the quest Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff, sending the player back into end-tier raids to reclaim these two fragments:
-
Staff Head of Atiesh – a guaranteed drop from the boss Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas.
-
Base of Atiesh – a guaranteed drop from the boss C’Thun in Ahn’Qiraj.
-
Crucially: Only one character can loot each piece per kill. The same player who collected the splinters must receive both items. With the staff head and base secured, the quest returns once more to Anachronos, who reassembles the weapon but warns that it remains tainted.
Step 3: Purification in Stratholme – Class Quest
After the fragments are reunited, Anachronos offers a class-specific quest matching the wielder’s role.
-
For this stage, the character temporarily carries a corrupted version of the weapon — Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian (Corrupted) — and is instructed to cleanse it in the undead side of Stratholme.
-
The ritual must be performed in Festival Lane, reached most easily from the service (undead) entrance.
Preparing for the Encounter:
-
A strong group is recommended: a durable tank, reliable healer, and at least one class capable of removing curses.
-
Before the purification begins, clear all enemies around Festival Lane to prevent interruptions during the upcoming encounter.
Step 4: Defeating Atiesh <Hand of Sargeras>
Once the street is secure, move to the consecrated area in Festival Lane. Using the corrupted Atiesh on this spot triggers the final challenge by summoning Atiesh <Hand of Sargeras>.
The fight is designed for players in high-end raid gear and heavily punishes groups that underestimate incoming damage.
Key Encounter Mechanics:
| Mechanic | Description and Tactics |
| Breath of Sargeras | A curse that reduces attack power. Must be dispelled quickly, especially from the tank and melee DPS. |
| Physical Damage | Approximately 200,000 health and steady melee swings dealing about 600–1,000 damage each. |
| Shadow Aura | Ticks for roughly 400 damage, applying constant pressure to the healers. |
| Shadow Bolt | Occasional casts that inflict around 1,500 damage on the target. |
| Andonisus, Reaper of Souls | The demon wields two copies of this weapon. A Disarm effect is possible but causes a damage spike of roughly 1,500 to the tank. |
The Sword Interaction: When a Warrior or Rogue successfully disarms him, one of the swords can be picked up and used temporarily. This powerful weapon drains 5% of the wielder’s maximum health every two seconds and disappears after five minutes, making coordination between the sword user and healers essential.
Priorities are maintaining curse removal, controlling incoming damage spikes, and avoiding unnecessary deaths. Once the demon falls, the purification quest is complete.
Step 5: Claiming the Legendary Staff
After the demon is defeated, return to the Anachronos NPC in the Caverns of Time. With the corruption finally removed, the Bronze Dragonflight entrusts the fully restored legendary staff to the caster who completed the chain:
-
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian for Druids.
-
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian for Priests.
-
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian for Warlocks.
-
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian for Mages.
Earning this weapon in WoW Classic Anniversary requires mastery of Naxxramas, victory over C’Thun, cooperation with the Brood of Nozdormu, and success in cleansing Stratholme. It remains one of the most prestigious achievements in WoW Classic.
