Picking the best class in WoW Forever, the Classic Plus version of World of Warcraft, is a bigger decision than it has ever been. Level 60 is permanent, characters are never wiped, and a Legacy system rewards you for the first character you take to the cap. The class you pick on November 4 is the class you raid with on December 9 — and very likely the one you still play years later.
This guide gives you a clear answer for both factions, the best class for every goal, the best race for each pick and the reasoning behind every choice. It is built on what Blizzard has shown for WoW Forever: the class reworks, the new talent trees, six new race and class combinations and the revamped racials. The beta starts on September 17, so final numbers can still move — the picks below are based on each class’s kit and role, not on early damage charts.
How We Picked the Best Class in WoW Forever
Five things about Classic Plus in WoW Forever shape which class is worth playing, and every recommendation in this guide is checked against them.
- Talents now change how you play. Every class is reworked. Talents no longer hand out small stat bonuses; they change how spells and abilities work. Trees keep 51 points, with major talents at 11, 21 and 31 points plus a new one at 16. A spec that felt weak before can now have a real rotation.
- Hybrids are stronger. Hit and critical strike now work the same for melee, ranged and spells, and healing power also adds a third of its value as spell damage. That makes gear far less wasted on Paladins, Shamans, Druids and Priests who switch roles.
- Raids come in three sizes. The Barrow Deeps is a 10-player raid, Hyjal Summit is 20 and Onyxia’s Lair is 40, all from December 9. Small raids need every player to cover more ground, so classes that can tank, heal and bring utility get invited first.
- The world stays at its size. There is no flying and no level scaling. You level on the ground, through nine new dungeons from level 13 to 60 — so classes that solo well and classes that dungeons need both level fast, in different ways.
- Your first character counts twice. The Legacy system is account-wide. In the pre-release build, reaching levels 25, 45 and 60 on a class awards Legacy Points, and Legacy perks make the next characters faster. The class you pick first is also the one that unlocks your alts’ head start.
Every WoW Forever Class at a Glance
All nine classes are available to both factions, now that the Horde has Paladins and the Alliance has Shamans. Here is what each class does, what is new in the footage shown so far and who it suits.
| Class | Roles | What stands out in WoW Forever | Pick it if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Tank, melee DPS | A heavily reworked tree with new Protection and Arms talents | The classic main tank or top melee in every raid size |
| Paladin | Tank, healer, melee DPS | Holy Strike, Seal of Fury for tanking, Judgement no longer uses up your seal, Retribution built to be viable | One character that fills any role, now on both factions |
| Hunter | Ranged DPS | Many new talents across all three trees; a pet that tanks for you while leveling | The smoothest solo leveling and open-world farming |
| Rogue | Melee DPS | New talents in every tree, with Mutilate shown in the footage | Burst damage, stealth and PvP control |
| Priest | Healer, ranged DPS | Fear Ward for every Priest, Penance and Prayer of Mending, race-specific Priest spells | The most wanted healer in any group |
| Shaman | Healer, ranged DPS, melee DPS | Riptide, Lava Burst, Maelstrom Weapon and dual wielding for Enhancement; now on the Alliance too | A flexible hybrid with totems every raid wants |
| Mage | Ranged DPS | Hot Streak and Arcane Blast shown in the footage | Top ranged damage, AoE farming and gold |
| Warlock | Ranged DPS | One of the most changed talent trees in the footage | Strong solo play with pets and heavy PvP pressure |
| Druid | Tank, healer, ranged DPS, melee DPS | Wild Growth, Berserk, a Cat leap behind the target; new forms for Skyborne | The only class with four ways to play |
Talent names come from footage and pre-release builds. Exact values arrive with the beta, but the direction of every class is already visible.
Whichever class you settle on, it starts at level 1 on November 4 — and with no flying and no level scaling, the climb to 60 is the longest part of your first weeks in WoW Forever.
Best Alliance Class in WoW Forever: Dwarf Shaman
The Dwarf Shaman is the strongest all-round pick for the Alliance. It is one of the six new race and class combinations, and it gives Alliance players something their raids have never had: Shaman totems. That alone makes it one of the most wanted characters in Alliance raid groups from December 9.
Why it wins:
- Three roles in one character. Restoration heals with Riptide, Elemental casts Lava Burst, and Enhancement fights in melee with Maelstrom Weapon and dual wielding. You can level as Enhancement and switch to healing for raids without starting over.
- Raid demand. Every Alliance raid needs a Shaman for totems, and in a 10-player Barrow Deeps group one Shaman is a big share of the raid’s utility.
- Hybrid gear finally works. With healing power adding spell damage and unified hit and crit, a Shaman can switch roles on the same gear far more easily.
- The right racials. Dwarf Stoneform removes poisons and diseases and cuts physical damage — a lifesaver in melee and in dungeons. Big Game Hunter adds 5% damage against beasts, which covers a large part of the leveling world, and Mace Specialization fits Enhancement weapons.
Who should skip it: players who want pure damage with no group duties. If that is you, look at the Mage or the Rogue below.
Alliance alternatives: the Human Paladin if you want the reworked Paladin kit with Will to Survive against stuns, and the Skyborne Druid if you want the new race and four roles in one class.
Best Horde Class in WoW Forever: Undead Paladin
The Undead Paladin is the best overall pick for the Horde. It is the combination Blizzard built the WoW Forever trailer around, and the Paladin is the class Blizzard used to show the whole class rework on stage.
Why it wins:
- The most reworked hybrid. Paladins get Holy Strike at level 6, a tanking seal — Seal of Fury — that adds Holy damage to melee attacks, turns part of it into an absorb shield while you hold a shield, and lets Judgement taunt from 10 yards, and Judgement no longer uses up your seal. Holy regains mana through Spirit, and Retribution gets an instant Holy Wrath and keeps the Shockadin playstyle.
- A first for the Horde. Horde raids have never had Paladins. Blessings and a plate healer or tank make an Undead Paladin a priority invite in every raid size.
- The best Horde tank. Seal of Fury and a 10-yard taunt make the Paladin a strong tank, and the Undead racials make it the safest one: fear and charm cannot pull you off the boss. Like the Shaman, the Paladin can also heal or fight, and level in one role before raiding in another.
- The right racials. Will of the Forsaken breaks fear, charm and sleep — the effects that stop a Paladin cold — and Touch of the Grave gives attacks and spells a chance to drain health, which adds up over a long leveling session.
Keep in mind: Paladins still have no spell interrupt and only limited ranged tools. Blizzard kept those weaknesses on purpose, so plan on a group for casters you need to stop.
Horde alternatives: the Tauren Shaman if you want a hybrid healer with War Stomp and extra health, the Orc Warlock for caster damage, and the Troll Hunter if you want the easiest solo climb.
Both picks earn their place in raids on December 9 — but only with a raid-ready set. A Shaman or Paladin that plans to heal or tank needs its pre-raid gear before the first pull, and a hybrid that levels in one role often needs a second set for the other.
Best Class for Every Goal
Not everyone wants the most versatile character. Here is the best pick for each goal on both factions.
| Goal | Alliance | Horde |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | Dwarf Shaman | Undead Paladin |
| Solo leveling | Dwarf Hunter | Troll Hunter |
| Tank | Dwarf Paladin | Undead Paladin |
| Healer | Gnome Priest | Tauren Shaman |
| Caster DPS | Gnome Mage or Gnome Warlock | Orc Warlock |
| PvP | Human Rogue | Undead Rogue |
| Gold farming | Gnome Mage | Orc Mage |
| Something new | Skyborne Druid | Skyborne Shaman |
Best Leveling Class: Hunter
With no flying and no level scaling, leveling in WoW Forever is a long walk through a world full of beasts. A Hunter’s pet takes the hits while you deal damage from range, so you rarely need to stop and rest. The Dwarf Hunter adds 5% damage to beasts through Big Game Hunter, and the Troll Hunter gets the same bonus from Beast Slaying plus Berserking and Rapid Regeneration for bad pulls. Both are the lowest-risk way to reach 60 on your own.
Best Tank: Paladin
Tanks decide how fast groups form, and with a dungeon in every level bracket they are in demand from level 13. The Paladin got the biggest tanking rework in WoW Forever: Seal of Fury adds Holy damage to every melee attack, grants an absorb shield worth half of that damage while a shield is equipped, and lets Judgement taunt from 10 yards instead of the usual 5, while Holy Strike adds threat. That makes the Paladin the best tank pick on both factions.
On the Alliance, the Dwarf Paladin adds Stoneform, which removes poisons and diseases and cuts physical damage for 8 seconds — a built-in defensive cooldown for big pulls. On the Horde, the Undead Paladin is the tank to play because of its racial: Will of the Forsaken breaks fear, charm and sleep, the effects that pull a tank off the boss and wipe a group, and Touch of the Grave keeps a trickle of healing coming while you hold threat. If you prefer a proven tank with the largest health pool, the Tauren Warrior is the Horde alternative, with Endurance (+5% health, +1% hit) and War Stomp.
Best Healer: Priest or Shaman
The Gnome Priest is new and unusually strong: Gnome Priests get Contingency Plan, a protective holy ward on an ally, and Confounding Flash, which confuses up to five nearby enemies, on top of Eureka! and extra mana from Expansive Mind. Every Priest now has Fear Ward. On the Horde, the Tauren Shaman heals with Riptide, stuns with War Stomp and survives mistakes with extra health.
Best Caster DPS: Gnome Mage or Gnome Warlock
For casters, the race matters as much as the class, and the Gnome is the best caster race in WoW Forever. Its new racial Eureka! makes your next three spells cost less and deal 10% more damage or healing. Used at the start of a fight, that is a free burst of damage without spending extra mana — on every pull while leveling, on every boss in a raid and at the opening of every PvP fight. Expansive Mind adds 5% more maximum mana on top, so a Gnome caster runs out later, and Escape Artist frees you from roots and slows.
That makes the Gnome Mage and the Gnome Warlock the best Alliance caster damage picks, and the new Gnome Priest the best caster healer. On the Horde, the Orc Warlock is the strongest caster: Blood Fury adds 10% attack and spell power for 15 seconds, Shatter Curse protects against curses and cuts magic damage, and Hardiness shortens stuns. The Troll Warlock, a new combination with Berserking for faster casts, is the Horde alternative.
Best PvP Class: Rogue
PvP in WoW Forever has 14 ranks and seasons, so control matters. Stuns and fears are the main tools of PvP, and the best racials are the ones that break them. The Human Rogue gets Will to Survive to break stuns; the Undead Rogue gets Will of the Forsaken against fear, charm and sleep. With stealth and burst damage, the Rogue picks its fights on the new 15v15 Darkspear Islands and in the open world.
Best Gold Farming Class: Mage
Mages gather groups of enemies and kill them together, which makes them the fastest farmers in most zones. The Gnome Mage opens every pull with Eureka! — three cheaper spells with 10% more damage — and has 5% more mana to keep farming. The Orc Mage is a new combination with Blood Fury for 10% more spell power, shorter stuns through Hardiness and Shatter Curse against curses — strong in the open world, where you farm.
Not every class farms like a Mage. Hybrids keep two sets of gear, raiders buy consumables every week, and tanks and healers spend most of their time in groups rather than farming. If you picked one of those roles, plan for gold early — mounts, professions and raid nights all cost it.
Best for Something New: Skyborne Druid or Skyborne Shaman
If you have played every class before, the Skyborne Druid is the freshest start in the game: a new race, a new starting zone on Zephras Isle, new Druid forms, Wild Growth and Berserk, plus Walk on Air to glide down from any height. On the Horde, the Skyborne Shaman is the newest thing you can play: a new race with a class only Horde Skyborne can take, the Zephras Isle start, Walk on Air, and Skysight for 10% faster running. Shaman also brings Riptide, Lava Burst and Maelstrom Weapon, so the new character can heal, cast or fight in melee.
Best Race for Each Faction
Racials got a pass across every race to make each one feel distinct. They matter less than the class you pick, but they decide close calls.
| Race | Faction | Key racials in WoW Forever | Best with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Alliance | Will to Survive (breaks stuns), Sword Specialization (+2% crit with swords), Perception | Rogue, Paladin, Warrior, Hunter (new) |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform (removes poison and disease, cuts physical damage), Big Game Hunter (+5% vs beasts), Mace Specialization | Shaman (new), Paladin, Hunter, Priest |
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka! (next 3 spells cost less and deal 10% more damage or healing), Expansive Mind (+5% mana, rage or energy), Escape Artist | Best caster race: Mage, Warlock, Priest (new) |
| Night Elf | Alliance | Elune’s Light (+10% crit for 15 sec), Shadowmeld, Quickness | Druid, Rogue, Hunter |
| Skyborne | Both (chosen at creation) | Walk on Air (glide), Wind Blessed (+1% haste), Elemental Insight (+5% vs elementals); Read Ley Line for the Alliance, Skysight for the Horde | Druid, Mage (Alliance), Shaman (Horde) |
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury (+10% attack and spell power), Hardiness (stuns 20% shorter), Shatter Curse | Warlock, Mage (new), Warrior, Hunter |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken (breaks fear, charm, sleep), Touch of the Grave (chance to drain health), Cannibalize | Paladin (new, best Horde tank), Rogue, Priest, Mage |
| Tauren | Horde | War Stomp, Endurance (+5% health, +1% hit), Plainsrunning | Warrior, Shaman, Druid |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking (10% faster attacks and casts), Rapid Regeneration, Beast Slaying (+5% vs beasts) | Hunter, Warlock (new), Mage, Priest |
Racial values come from the BlizzCon demo and the pre-release build and can still change before launch.
Leveling Your Class in WoW Forever
Whatever you pick, the road to 60 is the same length for everyone. Nine new dungeons now cover every bracket, from Hall of Thanes at level 13 to Shaper’s Terrace at the cap, so hybrids and tanks can level in groups while Hunters, Warlocks and Mages clear quests on their own. Plan your Classic Plus route around your class: soloists lean on quest zones like The Riverglades, group classes on the dungeon chain.
If you would rather spend launch week raiding than leveling, our WoW Forever leveling boost services take any class from 1 to 60 through the new zones and dungeons, self-play or piloted.
A second character is also where Legacy pays off. Legacy Points from your first character’s level milestones unlock account-wide perks, such as earning talent points from level 9, so an alt of a different class climbs faster than the first.
Getting Your Class Raid-Ready
The raids open on December 9, five weeks after launch. Whichever class you pick, it needs a pre-raid set first: dungeon drops from the level 60 instances and crafted pieces. Every dungeon now drops at least blue items, which helps, but the best pieces for each spec still take many runs. Hybrids that raid in a different role from the one they leveled in need a second set on top.
What Can Still Change Before Launch
- Numbers. Talent values, racials and class balance are from the demo and pre-release builds; the beta from September 17 will tune them.
- The full combination table. Blizzard has not published an official race and class chart yet; the six new combinations come from the BlizzCon demo.
- Two more combinations in spring 2027. The roadmap promises two further class and race combinations, not yet named.
- Raid tuning. Boss mechanics in the three December raids will decide which utility matters most.
The WoW Forever best class picks in this guide are built to hold up through all of that: the Dwarf Shaman and the Undead Paladin are valuable because of their roles and their place in their faction’s raids, not because of a single number. Play what you enjoy, lean toward a class your raid will need, and your WoW Forever character will stay useful for as long as the game runs.
